Question 1

How do air source heat pumps work?

Accepted Answer

An air source heat pump extracts natural heat from the outdoor air and converts it into a reliable energy source, efficiently heating your home and supplying hot water. Designed to function efficiently even in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius, these systems offer a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional heating methods.

Question 2

Will a heat pump be enough to provide all of my heating?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if it is sized correctly. A good system designer will take your household's heating requirements into consideration and make sure the heat pump they recommend is big enough to provide the right amount.

Question 3

Is it worth having a heat pump installed?

Accepted Answer

Air source heat pumps are four times more efficient than gas boilers and can cut carbon emissions by an impressive 75%. Switching to a heat pump saves on energy costs and removes the need for a gas bill if no other gas appliances are used in your home.

Question 4

How long does it take to install?

Accepted Answer

Usually, the process is completed within 3 days, as you need to install an outdoor unit and an indoor one in place of the device previously used. For a ductless system, it may take just one day while it takes longer for ground source heat pumps.

Question 5

Do heat pumps make a lot of noise?

Accepted Answer

The outdoor unit's noise level is typically comparable to a normal conversation or a quiet refrigerator, around 40-60 decibels. Modern air source heat pumps are designed to operate quietly with advanced noise reduction features.

Question 6

How much does a heat pump cost?

Accepted Answer

The cost of an air source heat pump typically ranges from £8,000 to £18,000, depending on system size and installation complexity. With the government grant of £9,000, this significantly reduces the upfront cost, making heat pumps an affordable upgrade for most homeowners.
